Dr. Perez provides comprehensive psychological treatment to medically-ill patients and their loved ones. His research and clinical emphasis is in Psycho-Oncology, a specialization that focuses on treating emotional distress related to cancer.

Services include individual, couple, and family psychotherapy for medical illness-related distress as well as treatment of pre-existing depression and anxiety that can worsen during a medical crisis. Dr. Perez offers psycho-educational support and group therapy for pain, disruption in sexual functioning, and stress management.  He also provides cognitive-behavioral treatment protocols for Panic Disorder, OCD, PTSD, depression and other life stressors.
Dr. Perez is an in-network participating provider for numerous insurance carriers. He accepts most insurance plans and also offers services in Spanish. Assistance is provided with insurance authorization prior to delivery of services.

Dr. Perez is a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY 18155) who has conducted psycho-oncology research and provided psychological treatment to medical patients for over 20 years. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Southern California with an emphasis in medical psychology.

Dr. Perez’s clinical and research interests focus on understanding how patients and families cope with the impact of cancer and other chronic illnesses. He has extensive experience in treating mood and anxiety disorders in the context of medical disease, and conducts couples therapy for relationship distress and treatment-related sexual dysfunction in breast and prostate cancer patients. His expertise includes an understanding of how patients can effectively cope with all aspects of the illness experience including initial diagnosis, treatment side effects, recurrent disease, and survivorship issues.

Dr. Perez’s research has been funded by the National Cancer Institute, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and the American Cancer Society; and his works have been published in peer-reviewed medical and psychology journals. He completed his residency at the Long-Beach Veterans Administration Hospital and more recently completed a tenure at City of Hope, where he served as the Co-director of the Department of Psychology in the division of Supportive Care and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Perez is currently a consulting psychologist at the Cancer Center at Huntington Hospital and Hoag Hospital. He has a comprehensive clinical psychology and psycho-oncology consultation practice in Irvine Ca.
